TRUMPET FISH

Aulostomus strigosus, yellow trumpetfish hunting near the rocks, Tenerife diving

The Atlantic Trumpetfish (Aulostomus strigosus) is the ultimate master of camouflage in Tenerife’s reefs. With its long, slender body and tubular snout, it can blend perfectly with the surrounding rocks, gorgonians, or even vertical seaweeds, often hanging motionless in the water column to surprise its prey.

One of their most fascinating behaviors is "shadow stalking"—a clever hunting tactic where they hide behind larger, non-predatory fish like groupers or parrotfish to approach their target undetected. Whether you spot them in their classic brown-striped pattern or their vibrant bright yellow phase, they are always a highlight of any dive.

Watching a Trumpetfish navigate the reef with such stealth and precision is a true spectacle of nature’s ingenuity. Their presence in the Canary Islands reminds us that in the ocean, survival is as much about wit and disguise as it is about speed.
