RONCADORES

Pomadasys incisus, large school of bastard grunts near a reef, Tenerife diving

The Bastard Grunt (Pomadasys incisus), locally known in the Canary Islands as Roncadores, is the architect of some of the most spectacular sights in Tenerife’s underwater world. Their name comes from the unique "grunting" sound they produce by grinding their teeth, a fascinating trait of this social species.

These shimmering silver fish are famous for forming massive, compact schools that hover near the sandy bottom or around rocky reefs. Diving into a "wall" of thousands of Roncadores is a hypnotic experience, as they move in perfect unison, reflecting the sunlight like a living mirror.

Watching these golden-eyed fish find safety in numbers is a powerful reminder of the social complexity of marine life. They are a true symbol of the Canary Islands' reefs, turning every dive into a grand natural performance.
