NUDIBRANCH

Blue and yellow nudibranch, Felimare picta, macro marine life in the Canary Islands

The nudibranch, also known as a sea slug, is one of the most colorful and surprising creatures found in the waters around Tenerife. Although small in size — usually between 2 and 10 centimeters — these delicate gastropods look like living pieces of art, covered in bright patterns, soft frills, and vibrant colors.

Nudibranchs are often found on volcanic reefs, rocky walls, and coral-covered surfaces, slowly moving across the seabed in search of food such as sponges, hydroids, and anemones. Despite their fragile appearance, many species are highly toxic and use bright colors to warn predators that they are not safe to eat.

One of the most fascinating facts about nudibranchs is that they can absorb toxins from their prey and use them as their own defense. Some species even steal stinging cells from jellyfish and anemones and store them in their bodies for protection.

These tiny creatures are hermaphrodites, meaning each individual has both male and female organs, which increases their chances of reproduction in the vast ocean.

Spotting a nudibranch during a dive in Tenerife is always a special moment — a reminder that even the smallest marine life can be incredibly beautiful and complex.
