GREEN TURTLE

Chelonia mydas, green sea turtle swimming near the reef, Tenerife diving

The green turtle, or Chelonia mydas, is one of the most iconic marine species in the waters around Tenerife. These gentle giants can grow up to 1.5 meters in length and weigh over 150 kilograms, and they are known for their slow, graceful swimming and peaceful nature.

Green turtles feed mainly on algae and seagrass, which makes the coastal areas around Tenerife an ideal habitat. You can often spot them near reefs, rocky outcrops, and sandy bottoms, especially in the south of the island, including dive sites like Palm Mar, La Caleta, and Abades. Unlike some other sea turtles, green turtles return to the same beaches to nest every few years, although in Tenerife they are mostly observed underwater rather than nesting onshore.

These turtles play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and supporting biodiversity. Diving with green turtles in Tenerife offers a magical experience — seeing these calm, ancient creatures glide effortlessly through the crystal-clear Atlantic waters is unforgettable.
