GORGONIA

Eunicella verrucosa, delicate yellow gorgonian on a deep reef, Tenerife diving

The bright yellow gorgonian coral (Gorgonia spp.) is one of the most striking sights along Tenerife’s rocky reefs. Anchored to the seabed, its fan-shaped branches sway gently with the Atlantic currents, filtering plankton from the water. These corals are not just visually stunning — they form complex habitats that provide shelter for a variety of small fish, shrimps, and other invertebrates, creating bustling miniature ecosystems. Divers often encounter them along mid-depth walls and rocky outcrops, where their vivid color contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the ocean. Observing a gorgonian in its natural environment gives a real sense of the richness and diversity of Tenerife’s underwater world.
