ELECTRIC RAY

Marbled electric ray on the sandy bottom, Torpedo marmorata, Tenerife diving

The Torpedo Ray, also known as the Electric Ray, is a fascinating and rare sight in Tenerife’s waters. This ray can produce a mild electric shock to stun prey, but don’t worry — it’s harmless to divers if observed responsibly.

You can spot them on sandy bottoms and near rocky reefs, often partially buried. Their rounded body and subtle movements make spotting a Torpedo Ray an exciting and memorable underwater encounter.

Fun Fact: Their electric ability is used for hunting, not defense, making them one of the most unique residents of Tenerife’s marine life. Voltage can be reach till 200 watts.
