CANARIAN LOBSTER

Enoplometopus antillensis, Atlantic reef lobster with vibrant colors, Tenerife diving

The Canarian lobster (Scyllarides latus), also known as the slipper lobster, is a distinctive marine crustacean found around the Canary Islands and in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Unlike typical lobsters, it has no large claws and is easily recognized by its wide, flattened body and shovel-shaped antennae. Its shell is usually reddish-brown with lighter patterns, providing good camouflage among rocky seabeds and reefs. The Canarian lobster lives mainly in shallow coastal waters, hiding in crevices during the day and becoming more active at night, when it feeds on mollusks, small invertebrates, and organic matter.
