BUTTERFLY RAY

Or mantelina, Gymnura altavela, raya in Tenerife

The Butterfly Ray is a truly eye-catching resident of Tenerife’s waters. With its wide, flat body and wing-like fins, it glides effortlessly along sandy bottoms, almost as if it’s flying underwater.

These rays are ovoviviparous, giving birth to live pups, usually during the warmer months of spring and summer.

Butterfly Rays are part of the delicate marine ecosystem around Tenerife, and observing them reminds us why responsible diving and ocean conservation are so important.

Very often they camouflage under the sand or fly close to the sandy bottom.
