BARRACUDA

Sphyraena viridensis, yellowmouth barracuda patrolling the blue, Tenerife diving

The Yellowmouth Barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) is the undisputed silver phantom of Tenerife’s open waters. With its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and sharp, prominent teeth, it is a master of speed and precision, perfectly adapted for life in the Atlantic currents.

These impressive predators are most famous for forming massive, shimmering schools that move in perfect synchronization. Watching a "tornado" of hundreds of barracudas circling in the blue is one of the most hypnotic and unforgettable experiences a diver can have in the Canary Islands.

Despite their fierce appearance, barracudas are curious yet peaceful neighbors to divers. Their presence is a sign of a vibrant, healthy marine ecosystem, reminding us of the raw power and beauty of the pelagic life that surrounds our islands.
