ANEMONES

Heteractis species ball anemone with an anemone shrimp on a reef, Tenerife diving

Sea Anemones are the vibrant "flowers" of Tenerife’s volcanic reefs. Far from being plants, these fascinating cnidarians are predatory animals that use their stinging tentacles to capture tiny prey. In the Canary Islands, species like the Snakelocks Anemone (Anemonia sulcata) and the Ball-tipped Anemone (Heteractis) create colorful oases in the cracks of the rocks.

One of the most magical sights for a diver is discovering the tiny world that lives within their reach. Small, translucent Anemone Shrimps often live among the tentacles, protected from predators by the anemone’s sting, while in return, they keep their host clean.

Whether they are swaying gently with the Atlantic swells or tucked away in a dark crevice, Anemones are a vital part of the reef’s delicate balance. They remind us that in the ocean, even the smallest creatures find ingenious ways to cooperate and survive together.
