From Guanche Roots to Guachinches
Tenerife’s food culture is simple, honest, and deeply connected to the land — shaped by volcanoes, ocean winds, and centuries of island life. Canarian food culture is not about fast dining or fine dining — it’s about time. Long lunches, shared plates, local wine, and conversations that last for hours.

HISTORY
Long before Spanish settlers arrived, the Guanches, Tenerife’s first inhabitants, lived on what the island provided. Their diet was based on goat meat, milk, cheese, wild herbs, fruits, and gofio — a roasted grain flour that is still eaten today. Gofio was their survival food, their “energy bar,” and their daily bread.
When Spain arrived in the late 1400s, new ingredients and cooking techniques blended with Guanche traditions. Over time, this created what we now know as Canarian cuisine: rustic, flavorful, and comforting.
